Russian Government wants to crack Tor

The Russian Government offers ~4 million ruble (~$111,000) to the one who decrypts data sent over Tor , an encrypted anonymizing network used by online users in order to hide their activities from law enforcement, government censors, and others. MVD (Russian Ministry of Internal Affairs) issued an notice on July 11, named “ Perform research, code ‘TOR’ (Navy) ”, an open call for Tor-cracking proposals whose winner will be chosen by August 20. Anonymity, which is of everybody’s interest, specially of activists, journalists, researchers, whistleblowers, who uses Tor anonymity service to hide their activities, are now under great threat from both sides. US cracking down on app piracy

While organisations like the MPAA and RIAA get a lot of press for lobbying governments into taking down music and movie related file sharing sites, the US authorities have been targeting a new kind of piracy as well – app piracy. In a single swipe, the US government has taken down three websites involved with the distribution of copyright protected applications. These include: applanet.net, appbucket.net and snappzmarket.com. Visiting those pages now gives you the simple message below: This wasn’t just some local scuffle however. Most of the servers operating these websites were found to be overseas, so it ended up taking internaional cooperation to take them offline.
