Silk Road website taken down by FBI

Silk Road website, also known as eBay for drugs, or Amazon.com for illegal drugs, was taken down, on 2 October 2013, by FBI. Silk Road was founded in February 2011. On June 1st, Gawker did a profile story on the site, which led to "internet buzz" and an increase in website traffic. On June 2011 U.S. Senator Charles Schumer asked federal law enforcement authorities such as the DEA and Department of Justice to shut down the website. Authorities seized the domain on October 2, 2013 as part of the arrest of the site's alleged owner. In February 2013, an Australian cocaine and MDMA dealer became the first person to be convicted of crimes directly related to Silk Road after authorities intercepted drugs he was importing through the mail, searched his premises, and discovered his Silk Road alias in an image file on his personal computer. Australian police and the DEA have targeted Silk Road users and made arrests, though with limited success at reaching convictions. On 1 ...

Anonymous Hackers Take Credit for HSBC Bank Website Disruptions

In an interesting turn of events, an Anonymous-affiliated hacker collective has taken credit for the cyberattacks that disrupted several websites owned by HSBC Holdings.   Initially, everyone believed that the distributed denial-of-service (DDOS) attacks were launched by Izz ad-Din al-Qassam Cyber Fighters, but hackers part of Fawkes Security have claimed credit for the operation. “As some of you may be aware HSBC bank suffered several DDoS attacks on the named sites in the past hours. us.hsbc.com, hsbc.co.uk, hsbc.com, hsbc.ca they were all brought down by #FawkesSecurity,” they wrote on Pastebin . According to the hackers, the proof that they’re responsible for downing the websites is available on their Twitter account.  The tweets they’re referring to indicate the precise time and the domains affected by the attacks. The targets include HSBC sites from France, US, UK and Canada. While the Twitter posts do show that Fawkes...

Demonoid Starts Redirecting to Ads and Malware

It’s been nearly a week since Demonoid went down following a huge DDoS attack and still there is no sign that the site will return. If anything, the situation has worsened somewhat. The site’s main domain is now redirecting straight to an ad network serving up malware to unsuspecting visitors. Demonoid is one of the world’s largest and longest standing sites that not only indexes torrents, but also operates its own tracker. Although the site has a reasonable uptime record, there have been a few occasions where it has not only gone down, but has disappeared completely. We are currently in one of those periods. Last week the latest of Demonoid’s difficulties turned out to be caused by a massive DDoS attack which initially crippled the site and then took it completely offine. But while DDoS attacks usually stop after a point has been made or the attackers get bored, the Demonoid admin explained that he had more on his mind. “There might have been an attack from anothe...

Russian Anonymous hacktivists vow to wreck Putin’s inauguration

A group of hackers calling themselves the Russian branch of the Anonymous Movement promised to launch cyber attacks on the websites of the Russian state agencies to support the opposition. The hackers announced their intent by posting videos on two micro-blogs. In these videos they said that the Russian government website will be subjected to DDOS attack on May 6, and on May 7 the same will happen with the prime minister’s site. May 7 is the day when Prime Minister and President-elect Vladimir Putin will be inaugurated as the President of Russian Federation. The hackers said that the attacks will be held in support of the “mass rally against the illegitimate elections, ” apparently meaning the 5000-strong opposition rally, dubbed by the media as the March of Millions. “We will support this protest by switching off the state websites that are full of lies, and the website of the Russian government will be the first. Let these civil servants see the love of the people...

Anonymous attacks Turkish ministries

International hacktivist organization staged a cyber attack against ministries in Turkey late yesterday. The group made a DDOS attack to the websites belonging to ministries of justice, interior and foreign affairs and websites belonging to the police department. A special team from Turkey's Telecommunications Directorate protected the websites from the attacks. The attacks lasted for two hours, during which none of the targeted websites were affected. An Internet outage that occurred last night in Ankara and Istanbul, meanwhile, had nothing to do with the attacks and was due to a fiber cable installation carried out by Türk Telekom, reports said. Anonymous took down CIA

Hacker group Anonymous claimed it took down the CIA website for the second time in two months following a new DDoS attack on the US secret service which lasted 45 minutes. Anonymous member Havittaja made the claim which, though not a hack that endangers data or leaves a message from the group, does mean that the CIA website is offline and unable to load. cia.gov is #DOWN forthelulz @ YourAnonNews @ AnonymousIRC @ anonopshispano — Havittaja (@Havittaja) April 16, 2012 The group first claimed to have taken the CIA website offline following a DDoS attack in February . That attack saw the CIA site experience issues for three days and this time around the site was offline for 45 minutes, although it is still loading slowly. The loosely grouped hacking collective had previously targeted US authorities following the decision to seize and prosecute file sharing service Megaupload. ‘ Operation Megaupload ‘ saw the Department of Justice (DoJ) website taken down ...
